Nerd Alert: The organoleptic characteristics of the monovarietal Nerello Mascalese generally are a ruby red color, with subtle grenade tones; a strong fruity scent of red berry fruits, with slight floral shades, a spicy hint, and a feeble effusion of vanilla and tobacco, with a persistent trace of licorice; and a dry, tannic, persistent and harmonic taste, with a strong body. It is one of the signature Sicilian vines but it’s rare since it’s only growned in the Etna DOC and the Faro DOC. Recent DNA testing has confirmed that the variety is the offspring of Italy’s famous Sangiovese grape variety and Mantonico Bianco.
Personal Note: I’ve read people compare this grape to a burgundian pinot noir. As you would imagine, my curiosity was quite lofty. When I looked for a wine with this grape locally, I couldn’t find one. So I did what I normally do when I can’t find a wine here. I called 1-800-BrotherBringMeSomeUnavailableWineOnYourNextTripHome. They even take my orders via text messages now. Anyway, I’ve heard recently one of the big distributors is bringing one so that’s good. As per the wine itself I was more than pleased. It was pronounced on nose, with marvelous spicy notes. There were earthy tones and minerality classical of old world wines but the fruit was also there giving the battle for protagonism. It was one enjoyable wine that I…wish I had finished that same day. I mention that on account of well, not finishing it, and the next day…it was gone. As in lost everything that made it special. I did take the air out but it just wasn’t the same. So lesson learned. Next Nerello will be dealt with the same day. One last thing. They mention on the label this wine is vegan friendly. Which is a new concept for me. There are so many animal related elements used in wine we don’t even know and its worth learning about it.
Thoughts?
